ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Background: Scientific productivity on motor neuron disease (MND) research has been hypothesized to be low in Southeast Asia (SEA). Objective: To investigate the scientific productivity of SEA countries on MND and the associations between research metric indices and various country-specific socioeconomic parameters. Methods: We searched electronic databases for relevant articles from SEA on MND from the earliest indexed record to June 30, 2020. We obtained the following research productivity indices: bibliometric (number of publications in journals with impact factor (IF) and Scopus citations) and altmetric indices (PlumX metrics). We also collected data from published literature and reliable sources on the following socioeconomic variables: population, gross domestic product (GDP), GDP per capita, %GDP allocated for research and development (R&D) and the number of neurologists per country. Results: We included 196 articles that satisfied our inclusion criteria. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis studies comprised the majority of the articles (n = 112; 57.1%). The top three countries in terms of the numbers of publications in journals with IF and in PlumX metrics were Singapore (n = 129), Malaysia (n = 26), and Thailand (n = 18). GDP per capita, %GDP for R&D and number of neurologists per one million population had strong positive correlations with the bibliometric and altmetric indices. Conclusions: This study highlights that although the scientific productivity of MND research in SEA has been low, it is continuously growing. This also emphasizes the imperative to improve economic indices and the number of neurologists in SEA to enhance scientific output on MND.


Resumo Antecedentes: A produtividade científica em pesquisa sobre doenças do neurônio motor (DNM) tem sido considerada baixa no sudeste asiático. Objetivo: Investigar a produtividade científica sobre DNM em países do sudeste asiático e as associações entre os índices métricos de pesquisa e vários parâmetros socioeconômicos específicos de cada país. Métodos: Foram consultadas bases de dados eletrônicas em busca de artigos relevantes sobre DNM provenientes do sudeste asiático, partindo do registro indexado mais antigo até 30 de junho de 2020. Obtivemos os seguintes índices de produtividade em pesquisa: bibliométrico (número de publicações em periódicos com fator de impacto (FI) e citações na base Scopus) e índices altmétricos (métrica PlumX). Também coletamos dados da literatura publicada e fontes confiáveis ​​sobre as seguintes variáveis ​​socioeconômicas: população, produto interno bruto (PIB), PIB per capita, % do PIB alocada para pesquisa e desenvolvimento (P & D) e o número de neurologistas por país. Resultados: Selecionamos 196 artigos que atenderam aos nossos critérios de inclusão. Estudos sobre esclerose lateral amiotrófica representaram a maioria dos artigos (n = 112; 57,1%). Os três principais países em termos de número de publicações em periódicos com FI e em métricas PlumX foram Cingapura (n = 129), Malásia (n = 26) e Tailândia (n = 18). O PIB per capita, a % do PIB para P & D e o número de neurologistas por um milhão de habitantes tiveram fortes correlações positivas com os índices bibliométricos e altmétricos. Conclusões: Embora a produtividade científica em pesquisa sobre DNM no sudeste asiático ainda seja baixa, este estudo mostra que ela vem crescendo continuamente. Isto também enfatiza a necessidade de melhorar os índices econômicos e o número de neurologistas na região para aumentar a produção científica sobre o assunto.

ABSTRACT

Worldwide, avian influenza H9N2 viruses of different lineages are the most widespread viruses in poultry. However, to date, cases in Russia have not been documented. In this study, we report the first detection of a G1-like H9N2 virus from poultry sampled at live-bird markets in Russia (Far East region) during the winter of 2018 (isolate A/chicken/Amur_Russia/17/2018). We assume there has been further circulation of the A/chicken/Amur_Russia/17/2018 H9N2 virus in the Russian Far East with possible distribution to other regions or countries in 2018–2019.

ABSTRACT

Abstract: The review provides information on the medicine application of 30 aquatic plant taxa growing in the Russian Far East, and the prospects for their practical use. A list of aquatic plants on the pharmacotherapeutic action is done. The greatest number of species of aquatic plants has analgesic, antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, stomach and antidiarrheal, wound-healing properties. It is revealed that the most widely in traditional medicine in Asia and Europe are used Nelumbo nucifera, Trapa natans, representatives of the family Lemnaceae, Nymphaeaceae, genus Potamogeton.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: A recent phase III study (PARAMOUNT) demonstrated that pemetrexed continuation maintenance therapy is a new treatment paradigm for advanced nonsquamous non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The majority of patients enrolled in PARAMOUNT were Caucasian (94%). We reviewed efficacy and safety data from two clinical trials, which enrolled East Asian (EA) patients, to supplement data from PARAMOUNT on pemetrexed continuation maintenance therapy in patients with nonsquamous NSCLC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Study S110 was a phase II, multicenter, randomized, controlled, open-label trial in never-smoker, chemonaive, EA patients (n=31) with locally advanced or metastatic nonsquamous NSCLC (n=27). Study JMII was a multicenter, open-label, single-arm, post-marketing, clinical trial in Japanese patients (n=109) with advanced nonsquamous NSCLC. PARAMOUNT was a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in patients with advanced nonsquamous NSCLC. RESULTS: In EA patients with nonsquamous NSCLC, the median progression-free survival (PFS) for pemetrexed continuation maintenance therapy was 4.04 months (95% confidence interval [CI], 3.22 to 5.29 months) in study S110 and 3.9 months (95% CI, 3.2 to 5.2 months) in study JMII. The median PFS for pemetrexed continuation maintenance therapy in PARAMOUNT was 4.1 months (95% CI, 3.2 to 4.6 months). Pemetrexed continuation maintenance therapy in EA patients in studies S110 and JMII did not lead to any unexpected safety events, and was consistent with PARAMOUNT's safety profile. CONCLUSION: The efficacy and safety data in the EA trials were similar to those in PARAMOUNT despite differences in patient populations and study designs. These data represent consistent evidence for pemetrexed continuation maintenance therapy in EA patients with advanced nonsquamous NSCLC.

ABSTRACT

The prevalence of atrial fibrillation (AF) is high in both community- and hospital-based studies in the Far East and South East Asia. Hypertension is the most common risk factor, but coronary heart disease and diabetes mellitus are other important co-morbidities in these countries. Anticoagulant therapy use was low, being 0.5%–28% in Malaysia, Singapore, and China. The reported rate of stroke related to AF was 13.0%–15.4% based on community studies in those countries and was 3.1%–24.2% of stroke rate in hospital-based cohorts. Better assessment of thromboembolic and bleeding risks is important. International guidelines now recommend the use of the CHA2DS2-VASc score to identify the ‘‘truly low-risk’’ AF patients, who do not need antithrombotic therapy, whilst those with ≥ 1 stroke risk factors can be offered oral anticoagulation. Aspirin is ineffective and may not be any safer than oral anticoagulants, especially in the elderly. It is anticipated that the availability of the new oral anticoagulant drugs would improve our efforts for stroke prevention in the Far East and South East Asia, especially where anticoagulation monitoring for warfarin is suboptimal.

ABSTRACT

With rapid population aging, the socioeconomic burden caused by dementia care is snowballing. Although a few community-based studies of Alzheimer's disease (AD) have been performed in Korea, there has never been a nationwide hospital-based study thereof. We aimed to identify the demographics and clinical characteristics of mild-to-moderate AD patients from the Clinical Research Center for Dementia of Korea (CREDOS) registry. A total of 1,786 patients were consecutively included from September 2005 to June 2010. Each patient underwent comprehensive neurological examination, interview for caregivers, laboratory investigations, neuropsychological tests, and brain MRI. The mean age was 74.0 yr and the female percentage 67.0%. The mean period of education was 7.1 yr and the frequency of early-onset AD (< 65 yr old) was 18.8%. Among the vascular risk factors, hypertension (48.9%) and diabetes mellitus (22.3%) were the most frequent. The mean score of the Korean version of Mini-Mental State Examination (K-MMSE) was 19.2 and the mean sum of box scores of Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR-SB) 5.1. Based on the well-structured, nationwide, and hospital-based registry, this study provides the unique clinical characteristics of AD and emphasizes the importance of vascular factors in AD in Korea.
